She will not allow Veterans of any war to be without Free Veterans Medical and Mental Health insurance and care. VA hospitals and clinics will be expanded.

She will not allow Muslims to get free Medical Care just because their religion does not allow Insurance. Since Islam does not allow Medical insurance Leah will pass a Executive Order that Muslim Doctors cannot take Medicare or Medicaid. 

She will not allow Sharia Mortgages in America. 

She will make government smaller but she will protect Social Security and other needed social programs for seniors, children and the disable. 

She will start to begin to investigate welfare fraud.

She will make the Department of Education smaller and give the States back the control of education.

After intervention by the Council on American Islamic Relations, the Defense Department reportedly decided it will now allow Muslim students participating in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps to wear headscarves and turbans while in uniform.
The decision marks the latest influence by controversial Islamic groups on military affairs.
WND previously broke the story that an Islamic group that has been closely tied to the Muslim Brotherhood and was named by the Justice Department as an unindicted co-conspirator in a scheme to raise money for Hamas is the official endorsing agency for the U.S. Armed Forces Muslim chaplain program.
The Islamic Society of North America, or ISNA, also runs regular events for the military's Muslim chaplains.
WND also reported the Army's Muslim chaplain program was founded by a terror-supporting convict while the Army's first Islamic chaplain, who is still serving, has been associated with a charity widely accused of serving as an al-Qaida front.
On Thursday, CAIR announced its activism was responsible for the decision to allow Muslim garb in the JROTC.
The Islamic group got involved following an incident in October in which a Muslim teen, Demin Zawity, reportedly quit the JROTC when her commanding officer at a Brentwood, Tenn., high school would not allow her to wear her hijab in the homecoming parade.
CAIR sent a letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta requesting "constitutionally-protected religious accommodations for the girl and for future Muslim JROTC participants."
Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Larry Stubblefield responded to CAIR's complaint by explaining the JROTC program will not allow religious headwear.
"Based on your concerns, the Army has reviewed its JROTC uniform policy and will develop appropriate procedures to provide Cadets the opportunity to request the wear of religious head dress, such as the turban and hijab," Stubblefield wrote in the letter, made public by CAIR. "This change will allow Miss Zawity and other students the chance to fully participate in the JROTC program."

While CAIR's activism may have taken place outside the Army, there are terror-tied Islamic groups that act in full partnership with the U.S. military.
Terror co-conspirator vets military chaplains
Since the Muslim chaplain program's inception in 1993, ISNA has been the official endorsing agency of the military's new chaplains.
In 2005, ISNA initiated a yearly Muslim chaplain conference that includes leadership talks for chaplains in both the military and U.S. prison system.
Discover the Networks notes that ISNA –through its Saudi-government-backed affiliate the North American Islamic Trust – reportedly holds the mortgages on 50 percent to 80 percent of all mosques in the U.S. and Canada.
ISNA was founded in 1981 by the Saudi-funded Muslim Students' Association, which was founded partially by the Muslim Brotherhood. The two groups are still partners.
WND attended an MSA event at which violence against the U.S. was urged by speakers.
"We are not Americans," shouted one speaker, Muhammad Faheed, at Queensborough Community College in 2003. "We are Muslims. [The U.S.] is going to deport and attack us! It is us versus them! Truth against falsehood! The colonizers and masters against the oppressed, and we will burn down the master's house!"
ISNA was named in a May 1991 Muslim Brotherhood document – "An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America" – as one of the Brotherhood's likeminded "organizations of our friends" who shared the common goal of destroying America and turning it into a Muslim nation.
Islam scholar Stephen Schwartz describes ISNA as "one of the chief conduits through which the radical Saudi form of Islam passes into the United States."
According to terrorism expert Steven Emerson, ISNA "is a radical group hiding under a false veneer of moderation" that publishes a bimonthly magazine, Islamic Horizons, that "often champions militant Islamist doctrine."
The group also "convenes annual conferences where Islamist militants have been given a platform to incite violence and promote hatred," states Emerson. Emerson cites an ISNA conference in which al-Qaida supporter and PLO official Yusuf Al Qaradhawi was invited to speak.
Emerson further reports that in September 2002, a full year after 9/11, speakers at ISNA's annual conference still refused to acknowledge Osama bin Laden's role in the terrorist attacks.
Also, ISNA has held fundraisers for terrorists, notes Discover the Networks. After Hamas leader Mousa Marzook was arrested and eventually deported in 1997, ISNA raised money for his defense. The group also has condemned the U.S. government's post-9/11 seizure of the financial assets of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Muslim convict founded chaplain program
ISNA has not been the only official endorsing agency of the military's Muslim chaplain program.
A former endorsing agency along with ISNA was the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Council, created in 1991 and operating under the umbrella of the American Muslim Foundation.
The American Muslim Foundation was founded by Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, an Islamic cleric who served as an Islamic adviser to President Bill Clinton and who guided the establishment of the military's Muslim chaplain program.
Al-Amoudi reportedly handpicked the Army's first Islamic chaplain, Imam Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad, who still serves in that position.
Al-Amoudi was instrumental in selected several other of the military's six Islamic chaplains.
Al-Amoudi currently is serving a 23-year sentence for illegal terrorism-related financial transactions with the Libyan government and for his role in a Libyan conspiracy to assassinate then-Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.
Al-Amoudi was described as an "expert in the art of deception" in a report by Newsweek journalists Mark Hosenball and Michael Isikoff.
The Newsweek article noted Al-Amoudi espoused moderate, pro-American views while lobbying for Muslim causes in the U.S. but then expressed support for Hamas and Hezbollah at an Islamist rally.
Al-Amoudi founded in 1990 the American Muslim Council, a lobbying group to advocate on behalf of Muslims in the United States.
Army's first chaplain tied to 'al-Qaida front'
Muhammad was recommended for appointment by Al-Amoudi's American Islamic Council.
Al-Amoudi attended Muhammad's swearing-in ceremony just as he was present for the 1996 swearing-in of the military's second Muslim chaplain, Lt. JG Monje Malak Abd al-Muta Ali Noel Jr.
Each Muslim chaplain must first be endorsed by an official Islamic agency.
Like most of the military's Muslim chaplains, Muhammad's endorsing agency was the ISNA.
Muhammad is a convert to Islam. In 1974 he joined the Lost-Found Nation of Islam, a Black Muslim group that espoused racial separatism and black nationalism. Muhammad later said he did not fully subscribe to the radical group's philosophy, but was attracted by what he said was the organization's emphasis on personal responsibility and self-help.
"In the projects where I grew up," Muhammad said, "the women were exploited. In the Nation of Islam, the men were always polite. They were always clean cut. I felt the Nation of Islam had more to offer than the church."
In a 1993 interview with Muslehuddin Ahmed of Islam4all.com, Muhammad detailed his association with the Muslim World League, or MWL, a Saudi-funded Muslim charity accused of terrorism financing and ties to al-Qaida.
The website reports Muhammad was in dialogue with the charity to help establish the Army's Muslim chaplain program.
During the period of Muhammad's association with the MWL, the group spawned Muslim charities that were alleged fronts for al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden.
Muhammad recounted to Islam4all how he was an "honored guest" of the MWL for his Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
"He was also full of praise for the Muslim World League for its excellent arrangements, which it had made for its guests, and was highly impressed by its dedicated Secretary General Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Ali, who symbolized for him a model Muslim leader," reported Islam4all.
The Islamic website reported Muhammad offered to work closely with the MWL and that he began an "ongoing interaction with the MWL in shaping and developing a vital Islamic presence within the U.S. Armed Forces."
The website reported Muhammad "evinced keen interest in the magazines and other publications of the Muslim World League and other similar organizations for support in his Dawah work."
Al-Qaida links
The MWL, meanwhile, was founded in Mecca in 1962 and bills itself as one of the largest Islamic non-governmental organizations.
But according to U.S. government documents and testimony from the charity's own officials, it is heavily financed by the Saudi government.
The MWL has been accused of terror ties, as have its various offshoots, including the International Islamic Relief Organization, or IIRO, and Al Haramain, which was declared by the U.S. and U.N. a terror financing front.
The Treasury Department, in a September 2004 press release, alleged Al Haramain had "direct links" with Osama bin Laden. The group is now banned worldwide by United Nations Security Council Committee 1267.
There long have been reports citing accusations the IIRO and MWL also repeatedly funded al-Qaida.
In 1993, bin Laden reportedly told an associate that the MWL was one of his three most important charity fronts.
An ADL profile of the MWL accuses the group of promulgating a "fundamentalist interpretation of Islam around the world through a large network of charities and affiliated organizations."
"Its ideological backbone is based on an extremist interpretation of Islam and several of its affiliated groups and individuals have been linked to terror-related activity," the profile says.
In 2003, U.S. News and World Report documented that accompanying MWL's donations, invariably, are "a blizzard of Wahhabist literature."
"Critics argue that Wahhabism's more extreme preachings – mistrust of infidels, branding of rival sects as apostates, and emphasis on violent jihad – laid the groundwork for terrorist groups around the world," the report continued.
An Egyptian-American cab driver, Ihab Mohamed Ali Nawawi, was arrested in Florida in 1990 on accusations he was an al-Qaida sleeper agent and a former personal pilot to bin Laden. At the same time he was accused of serving bin Laden, he also reportedly worked for the Pakistani branch of the MWL.
The MWL in 1988 founded the Al Haramain Islamic Foundation, developing chapters in about 50 countries, including for a time in Oregon until it was designated a terror organization.
In the early 1990s, evidence began to grow that it was funding Islamist militants in Somalia and Bosnia, and a 1996 CIA report detailed its Bosnian militant ties.
The U.S. Treasury designated Al Haramain's offices in Kenya and Tanzania as sponsors of terrorism for their role in planning and funding the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in East Africa. The Comoros Islands office was also designated because it "was used as a staging area and exfiltration route for the perpetrators of the 1998 bombings."
The New York Times reported in 2003 that Al Haramain had provided funds to the Indonesian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah, which was responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. The Indonesia office was later designated a terrorist entity by the Treasury.
In February 2004, the U.S. Treasury Department froze all of Al Haramain's financial assets pending an investigation, leading the Saudi government to disband the charity and fold it into another group, the Saudi National Commission for Relief and Charity Work Abroad.
In September 2004, the U.S. designated Al-Haramain a terrorist organization.
In June 2008, the Treasury Department applied the terrorist designation to the entire Al-Haramain organization worldwide
Bin Laden's brother-in-law
In August 2006, the Treasury Department also designated the Philippines and Indonesia branch offices of the MWL-founded IIRO as terrorist entities "for facilitating fundraising for al Qaida and affiliated terrorist groups."
The Treasury Department added: "Abd Al Hamid Sulaiman Al-Mujil, a high-ranking IIRO official [Executive director of its Eastern Province Branch] in Saudi Arabia, has used his position to bankroll the al-Qaida network in Southeast Asia. Al-Mujil has a long record of supporting Islamic militant groups, and he has maintained a cell of regular financial donors in the Middle East who support extremist causes."
In the 1980s, Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, Osama bin Laden's brother-in-law, ran the Philippines offices of the IRRO. Khalifa has been linked to Manila-based plots to target the pope and U.S. airlines.
The IRRO has also been accused of funding Hamas, Algerian radicals, Afghanistan militant bases and the Egyptian terror group Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya.
The New York Post reported the families of the 9/11 victims filed a lawsuit against IIRO and other Muslim organizations for having "played key roles in laundering of funds to the terrorists in the 1998 African embassy bombings" and for having been involved in the "financing and 'aiding and abetting' of terrorists in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing."
'Saudi government front'
In a court case in Canada, Arafat El-Asahi, the Canadian director of both the IIRO and the MWL, admitted the charities are near-entities of the Saudi government.
Stated El-Asahi: "The Muslim World League, which is the mother of IIRO, is a fully government-funded organization. In other words, I work for the government of Saudi Arabia. I am an employee of that government.
"Second, the IIRO is the relief branch of that organization, which means that we are controlled in all our activities and plans by the government of Saudi Arabia. Keep that in mind, please," he said.
Despite its offshoots being implicated in terror financing, the U.S. government never designated the MWL itself as a terror-financing charity. Many have speculated the U.S. has been trying to not embarrass the Saudi government.

Sheriff Joe's posse delivers promised Obama surprise

Panel probing eligibility for 2012 ballot wants to see original birth certificate

Arizona's maverick Sheriff Joe Arpaio promised surprises in his jurisdiction's investigation of Barack Obama's eligibility for the presidential ballot and his Cold Case Posse is delivering – raising questions that touch on the authenticity of the long-form birth certificate issued last April and the possibility Obama is using a fraudulent Social Security Number.
Sources close to the investigation say the posse has decided it needs to see original birth records before it can conclude whether Obama should be eligible for the presidential ballot in 2012, not an electronic file or scanned copies.
The sources say the panel needs to examine the microfilm documenting Obama's birth, as well as the ink-and-paper original 1961 birth records the Hawaii Department of Health is holding in its vault.
The PDF file and various scanned copies of the birth certificate that the White House released April 27 are simply not good enough, the posse has determined.

Earlier this month, WND senior staff reporter Jerome R. Corsi spent 18 hours over a two-day period in Arizona briefing the Cold Case Posse on a wide range of evidence regarding Obama's eligibility.
"The posse wants to see the entire microfilm roll containing Obama's birth certificate, not just a microfilm copy of Obama's long-form birth certificate in isolation," Corsi explained. "An individual microfilm copy could be forged, but forging the entire microfilm reel on which Obama's birth certificate is in sequence would be almost impossible."
Also, Corsi said, the posse wants the ink-and-paper original 1961 Obama birth records still held in vault by the Hawaii Department of Health to be released publicly and subjected to independent court-authorized forensic examination.
Corsi affirmed that the posse's conclusion it needs to see the Obama birth certificate microfilm is part of the "shock" that Arpaio warned would be forthcoming, when he spoke last week to the Surprise Tea Party group meeting in Surprise, Ariz.

The focus on the microfilm records of Obama's birth arose after Arpaio's investigators realized the birth certificates of twins born the day after Obama, the Nordykes, had been released as white-on-black copies of microfilm to the family by the Hawaii Department of Health in 1966.
WND reported in July 2009 that Mrs. Eleanor Nordyke made public the copies in an article by the Honolulu Advertiser.

WND also has reported that the Obama birth certificate's number appears to be out of sequence with the birth certificates of the Nordyke twins.
The Nordyke twins were born Aug. 5, 1961, one day after Obama, and their birth certificates were registered Aug. 11, 1961, three days later than Obama. Yet their birth certificates have lower numbers.
Susan Nordyke, the twin born first, has certificate number 10637, and her sister Gretchen has certificate number 10638. Obama, born Aug. 4, 1961, and registered Aug. 8, 1961, has certificate number 10641.
"In 1961, Barack Obama was not a celebrity," Corsi commented. "If the Nordyke twins birth certificates were reduced to microfilm or microfiche by 1966, the date Mrs. Nordyke got the copies she made public, then Obama's birth certificate should have been reduced to microfilm or microfiche at the same time."
Corsi also indicated that the Arizona posse has interviewed court-certified forensic examiners who have advised that they can only issue an expert opinion on whether Obama's birth certificate is a forgery if they can examine the original ink-and-paper records.
Corsi told WND the Arpaio investigation is far-reaching in scope.
In addition to examining whether or not the long-form birth certificate is a forgery, the Cold Case Posse is examining evidence that Obama may have a fraudulent Social Security Number. The posse also is looking at records pertaining to Obama's birth narrative that suggest Barack Obama Sr. may not be the biological father.
"In total, the Cold Case Posse has assembled some 2,000 pages of evidence in the case," Corsi explained, "and is now preparing to conduct interviews to examine a wide range of questions, including that Obama may not be qualified to be president under Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution because he was a dual citizen at birth, given that his father was listed as a citizen of Kenya when the future president was born."
Corsi said the Cold Case Posse is currently in the process of briefing various Arizona state officials about the progress of the investigation.
"Sheriff Arpaio said this would be a thorough and diligent investigation," Corsi said, "and that is exactly what the investigation has become. Sheriff Arpaio once again has proven to be a man of his word."

Polarik's "Breaking" News is Broken

Well, Polarik's back. And rather than just claiming that Obama is the love child of Malcolm X and a Lebanese woman, or pretending that every childhood photo of Obama was faked in Photoshop, now he's spinning a tale that puts himself directly in the story.

The last time I posted about Polarik here (outside of a passing mention in a footnote in "Secret Origin, Part 2") was over a year ago, when he claimed PolitiFact invented a rumor about Obama's middle name. Now he's again trying to shift responsibility for something Birther-related, with a YouTube video and a WorldNetDaily article that claim the White House website linked to a fake Certification of Live Birth that Polarik created on his computer.

This is his claim, as expressed at YouTube:

On April 27, 2011. Obama and his White House held a press conference in which they gave reporters a copy of his "long-form" birth certificate and a copy of his "short-form" birth certificate." That copy, now posted on WHITEHOUSE.GOV, came from the image I created and stored in my Photobucket account - they did not make a copy of his short-form because there is no short-form (the COLB).

Ron's 'evidence' for this is essentially two-fold:

1) The White House blog linked to a black-and-white PDF scan of Obama's COLB that indicates that it was printed off the Snopes website, as it has a Snopes URL at the bottom.

2) An article on the Snopes website used to link to a COLB image in Polarik's Photobucket account.

He goes on at length (as he is wont to do), but that's the core of his claim. The only problem is that even given that both of the above are true, that still doesn't support his conclusion that the White House published and/or circulated an imitation document he'd created.

The White House printed off an image that was ON the Snopes server. The Snopes article linked to a Polarik image that was NOT on the Snopes server, but was rather on Photobucket's. The only way the White House published Polarik's image was if Snopes uploaded Polarik's image to its own server and published it at this address.

And Polarik provides absolutely zero evidence to support that conclusion. Rather, much of his argument contradicts it. He shares some charts showing pageviews of his Photobucket account that came from Snopes. But if web surfers are arriving at his account, then they're not looking at an image uploaded to Snopes' server.

After Polarik went public with this claim, several holes were pointed out in his story. The Snopes image has file info that says it was last modified "Saturday, November 15, 2008 3:19:50 PM." Polarik's fake COLB has file info that says it was last modified "Saturday, March 12, 2011 7:48:46 AM." Furthermore, the White House's image is clearly not Polarik's fake; there's a telltale uneven line of text at the bottom that clearly distinguishes the two. All too quickly, Ron's story was falling apart.

Now if I may interrupt my own narrative for a moment, let's go back a year, to June 2010. Polarik posts his own thread at FreeRepublic entitled "**Obama Bombshell** Blue Hawaii: Health Department falsified Obama's birth records!" In it, he wrote:

Sometime between October 31, 2008, and July 27, 2009, the dates of Health Director Chiyome Fukino's two press releases, Hawaii amended Obama's birth record. A brand-new Certificate of Live Birth (not Certification of Live Birth) was issued to him...

Not only did Obama get a new birth certificate, the certificate itself was designed with him in mind as Rev. 10/08 - coincidentally, the date of Fukino's first press release (10/31/08). Hawaii  ditched the old Certification of Live Birth and switched to a hybrid form called a “Certificate of Live Birth” - formerly the name of the long-form birth certificate.

When Freepers realized that Polarik wasn't being quite honest with them, he did an about-turn and posted a disclaimer, where he said that he'd posted his fake image to test people to see if they could spot it.

Okay, that aside was to provide some context for how Polarik answered his current detractors. He updated his YouTube description so that it now says:

[ **UPDATE** Last year, I made a 2nd forgery with an obvious flaw in it (a tilted line) to see if people would notice it. They didn't. People are only seeing it now because the White House posted a black & white outline of my prior image (which does not have the flaw).

That outline was made from my image shown in the video, but I left the link alone so that viewers can see the flawed forgery that so many have called a genuine copy of Obama's birth certificate.

You see? Sure, it looks like he was lying, but really he was just using a fake image to test people. Again.

He also added a single word to his original video description, to suit his new and improved story (addition emphasized):

New story, new details.

Not that the new narrative makes a lick of sense. In attempting to incorporate various inconvenient facts, Polarik has ended up making the following claim:

That Polarik created a fake COLB and posted it to his Photobucket account. That Snopes downloaded it and uploaded it to their server. That as a 'test', Polarik replaced his original fake with a crappier fake that had a tilted line. And that the White House printed out the original fake from Snopes and gave it to the press.

So now we have TWO Polarik-created fakes, one which has a tilted line and one which he says exists but hasn't shown. Plus an inexplicable scheme to switch out a really good fake for a not-so-good fake to see if people noticed. And a claim that the White House published a fake he created, but not the same fake he originally claimed they published a few days ago.

Still, even as silly as that sounds, is it believable? No. In trying to salvage his story, he simply made it worse.

For starters, one can view Polarik's Photobucket RSS feed to see when images were uploaded. "BO_Birth_Certificate.jpg" was indeed uploaded on March 12, 2011. Rather curiously, images called "Barack Obama's birth certificate (Factcheck copy)" and "Barack Obama's birth certificate (Fight The Smears copy)" were also uploaded the day before on March 11...and they're the same fakes with the tilted line. 'Test' or not, he was certainly out to lie to people about what his uploads represented.

This upload date demonstrates one of the problems with Polarik's new timeline. He uploaded the tilted line fake on March 12, but the White House printout was made on April 25, 2011. Yet the White House image is clearly not the March 12 fake. In fact, Polarik's version 2.0 story is maddeningly irrational; if Snopes had already linked to a fake he created, then why replace it with a more obvious fake? And why, when you go public, do you only brag about Snopes linking to the obvious fake, and not mention the 'prior image' at all until you revise your story?

The feed doesn't show when the original "BO_Birth_Certificate.jpg" was uploaded to Polarik's Photobucket account, but there was indeed a prior image at that URL. However, it wasn't a fake; it was the real thing. Israel Insider linked to it way back on June 24, 2008. Polarik certainly hadn't created a polished fake within two weeks of the original release of the COLB. He simply uploaded the real image, using the same filename that the DailyKos had used. Then in March 2011, for some reason, he replaced it with an imitation.

In browsing my computer files, I found something of note:

See there? "BO_Birth_Certificate.jpg," which I saved July 20, 2009. Followed by several other Polarik-created COLB files which I saved contemporaneously while I was writing about Polarik. And what does BO_Birth_Certificate.jpg look like?

Yep. It's just the plain ol' real COLB. If you open it in a separate window from the tilted line fake, you can see the differences for yourself. This isn't merely a shifting of a line; the entire rattan background changes, as does the border.

So, long story short, what do we have here? Snopes may have linked to a once-legitimate image URL on Polarik's Photobucket account, which Polarik originally uploaded in June 2008 but surreptitiously swapped out for an imitation image in March 2011. (This is a reminder of the risks of hotlinking to outside sites.) The White House printed out a legitimate image that was saved to the Snopes server, said image having nothing at all to do with Polarik's March 2011 fake. There's no evidence whatsoever of Polarik's 'prior' fake that was first mentioned in his revised story. Polarik's first attempt at his story may have gotten published at WND, but its faults caused him to revise it, but the narrative still crumbles under basic scrutiny.

Early Obama Poem Shows Davis's Hand

Many thanks to my correspondent, "Mr. Southwest," for surfacing an early and revealing Obama poem that I had heretofore not seen. 

The unnamed poem, which I will call "Forgotten," was unearthed for a lengthy March 2008 article in Vanity Fair by the magazine's national editor, Todd Purdum.  It reads as follows:

I saw an old, forgotten man

On an old, forgotten road.

Staggering and numb under the glare of the

Spotlight. His eyes, so dull and grey,

Slide from right to left, to right,

Looking for his life, misplaced in a

Shallow, muddy gutter long ago.

I am found, instead.

Seeking a hiding place, the night seals us together.

A transient spark lights his face, and in my honor,

He pulls out forgotten dignity from under his flaking coat,

And walks a straight line along the crooked world.

When Purdum mentioned the poem to Obama in 2008, Obama told Purdum he had no memory of it.  (By contrast, I can still recite the poem that won a class contest when I was a freshman in high school.)  After Purdum read the poem to Obama, he said, "That's not bad.  I wrote that in high school?"

The poem, which was published in 1978 or 1979 in Obama's high school literary magazine, is not bad at all.  In fact, for a B-minus jock at a Hawaii prep school, the poem is exceptional.  The question that must be asked, however, is the one that Obama himself poses: did he actually write it?

As to the content of the poem, Obama told Purdum, "It sounds in spirit that it's talking a little bit about my grandfather."  Note that the subject of this sentence is "it," not the expected "I."  As he does even in the forward of his acclaimed 1995 memoir, Dreams from My Father, Obama distances himself from his presumed composition.

The "grandfather" Obama refers to here, of course, is his mother's father, Stanley Dunham -- "Gramps," the Willy Loman character with whom Obama lived during much of his adolescence.  If the critics are to be believed -- and they ought not be -- that makes two early Obama poems about his grandfather.

The second poem, called "Pop," was published under Obama's name in the Occidental College literary magazine in 1981.  Rebecca Mead, for instance, writing in the New Yorker, unhesitatingly describes "Pop" as a "loving if slightly jaded portrait of Obama's maternal grandfather."

Obama biographer Remnick makes the same point.  "'Pop,'" he says, as though a given, "clearly reflects Obama's relationship with his grandfather Stanley Dunham."   I could find no mainstream publication that even suggests otherwise. 

The two poems do seem to be about the same person, a world-weary older man with whom the young Obama has a personal relationship.  In "Forgotten," the old man's "eyes, so dull and grey / Slide from right to left, to right."  In "Pop," the "dark, watery eyes" of the old man "glance in different directions." 

The contention that "Pop" is about Dunham, however, leaves a basic question unanswered: why did Obama not call the poem "Gramps"?  If I were to write about the man I knew as "Gramps," I might not necessarily call the poem "Gramps," but I surely would not call it "Pop."  That latter title, after all, has obvious implications. 

The case for Dunham as "Pop" is further weakened by the line in the poem "he switches channels, recites an old poem / He wrote before his mother died."  Although Obama credits Gramps with a little poetic dabbling, Dunham was more of a dirty limerick kind of guy than a real poet. 

As an adolescent, Obama did have a relationship with a real poet: Frank Marshall Davis, a Communist and pornographer but also a skilled writer.  "I could see Frank sitting in his overstuffed chair," Obama remembers in Dreams, "a book of poetry in his lap, his reading glasses slipping down his nose."

Obama continues, "[Frank] would read us his poetry whenever we stopped by his house, sharing whiskey with Gramps out of an emptied jelly jar."  As to the sharing of sage advice, that description fits Davis better than it does Dunham.  "I was intrigued by old Frank," Obama writes in Dreams, "with his books and whiskey breath and the hint of hard-earned knowledge behind the hooded eyes."

A 1987 interview with Davis recorded by the University of Hawaii shows the man Obama describes as "Pop": the drinking, the smoking, the glasses, the twitches, the roaming eyes, the thick neck and broad back.

More to the point, Dunham's mother died when he was eight years old.  Obama knows this.  He says so in Dreams.  Dunham would not have read a poem he wrote "before his mother died."  Davis's mother, however, died when Davis was twenty and had already established himself at Kansas State as a poet of promise. 

On one occasion in Dreams, the teenage Obama stops by Davis's house alone, and there Davis pours him his own shot.  "Pop" seems to memorialize such visits:

Pop takes another shot, neat,

Points out the same amber

Stain on his shorts that I've got on mine, and

Makes me smell his smell, coming

From me ...

A little more obliquely, "Forgotten" captures a comparable experience.

Seeking a hiding place, the night seals us together.

A transient spark lights his face, and in my honor,

He pulls out forgotten dignity from under his flaking coat,

And walks a straight line along the crooked world.

Maya Soetoro-Ng, Obama's half-sister, would describe Davis as her brother's "point of connection, a bridge ... to the larger African-American experience."  Both "Pop" and "Forgotten" would seem to validate that assertion.

Davis, however, may have been more than mere bridge for Obama at this stage of his life.  In my forthcoming book, Deconstructing Obama, I deal with the sexual innuendo implicit in "Pop" as well as the explicit suggestion of paternity in the poem's title.

Here, I will just deal with the issue of authorship.  In reading Davis's poems -- his estate denied me permission to reprint them -- one senses that he is more than just the subject of the two Obama poems.  In fact, "Forgotten" and "Pop" have as much in common with Davis's 1975 poem "To A Young Man" as they do with each other.

All three poems show a comparable sophistication in language and structure.  Written in free verse, each makes ready use of what is called "enjambment" -- that, is the abrupt continuation of a sentence from one line into the next.

Each too deals with an intimate, ambiguous relationship between a young man and his much older mentor.  In all three poems, the Davis character is discussed in the third person.  In "Forgotten," he is the "old, forgotten man."  In "To A Young Man," he is "the old man."  In "Pop," of course, the narrator calls him "Pop."

In "To A Young Man," the Davis character says on one occasion, "Since then I have drunk / Half a hundred liquid years / Distilled / Through restless coils of wisdom."  Note in "Pop" the similar flow of language: "Pop switches channels, takes another / Shot of Seagrams, neat, and asks / What to do with me, a green young man."

There are parallels in word choice as well as in style.  "Neat" means without water or ice. "Neat" and "Distilled" both suggest a kind of alcoholic purity.  The author emphasizes each of these words by isolating it from the flow of the text.

In "Forgotten," the poet suggests a certain purity to alcohol as well, referring to a likely flask pulled from underneath his coast as "forgotten dignity."

At the conclusion of all three poems, the young man receives some useful wisdom from the older man that cuts through the alcoholic haze and adds meaning to the old man's life.

In "Forgotten," "a transient spark" lights the old man's face.  "Pop" also concludes on an upbeat note: "I see my face, framed within / Pop's black-framed glasses / And know he's laughing too."  In the Davis poem "To a Young Man," the old man "turned / His hammered face / To the pounding stars / Smiled / Like the ring of a gong."

Curiously, Obama's "Pop" reads more like the Davis poem than it does Obama's earlier poem.  In "Pop" and "To A Young Man," for instance, the older character speaks to the young man, and he does so without benefit of quotation marks.  More consequentially, each of these two poems has a leaner style than "Forgotten" and a whiff of cynicism about it.

The young man of "Pop" dismisses the old man's wisdom as a mere "spot" in his brain, "something / that may be squeezed out, like a / Watermelon seed between / Two fingers."  Comparably, the old man in the Davis poem "walked until / On the slate horizon / He erased himself."  Whether "squeezed out" or "erased" from the young man's consciousness, the older character understands just how tenuous is his hold on the lad.

This is more hunch than science, but I suspect that as a reward for the young Obama's friendship, Davis may well have slipped this "green young man" a poem or two for publication.  Nowhere else in his unaided oeuvre, such as it is, does Obama show the language control he does in "Pop" or "Forgotten."

Such an everyday scam would not have seemed unethical to an old Communist used to the "flim and flam" (Pop) of a "crooked world" (Forgotten) where "one plus one" does not necessarily make "two or three or four" (To A Young Man). 

Trained to believe that nothing adds up and the deck is stacked against him, Obama has seemed from the beginning entirely comfortable with a counterfeit literary career.
