Shariah Law in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A decision by Ohio officials to remove all pork products from prison menus in response to a lawsuit by Muslim inmates is not sitting well with the state's pork producers and processors.

Both promise action of their own, including a possible counter lawsuit, to address what they consider an unfair and illogical decision.

We really think it's not in the best interest, frankly, of the whole prison system," said Dick Isler, executive director of the Ohio Pork Producers Council. "It seems like we're letting a small group make the rules when it really isn't in the best interest of the rest of prisoners

Pork is inexpensive and nutritious and compares well to other lean meats, he said.

Ironically, the inmates' lawsuit doesn't involve pork at all; it demands that non-pork meats like beef come from animals slaughtered according to Islamic law. But the prisons system responded by simply removing pork as an option altogether.

If Ohio would provide Muslim inmates with pre-packaged meals similar to those given to Jewish inmates, as the lawsuit requests, it wouldn't be necessary to remove pork from menus, said David Singleton, executive director of the Ohio Justice and Policy Center, which is suing on behalf of the two inmates.

Assistant prisons director Steven Huffman has spoken with Isler, but the system isn't changing its mind, spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said Wednesday.

She said she couldn't comment on the lawsuit specifically, but said removing pork assures that inmates' religious practices aren't jeopardized by pork coming into contact with other food during preparation.

Ohio joins California, Florida, Maryland and Massachusetts among states that don't serve pork in prisons. Massachusetts stopped serving pork more than a decade ago to satisfy religious preferences, said prisons spokeswoman Diane Wiffin.

Ohio first took pork off the menu in 2009 after, in a money-saving attempt, it closed the pig farm and processing facility it operated to provide meat for inmates.

Last year, after lobbying by pork producers, the system added pork rib patties back to the menu once a week, at a cost of about $27,000 a week. The pork was provided by a Michigan company, and so Ohio producers aren't affected, Smith said.

"This issue seems to be blown out of proportion based on a misunderstanding," she said.

Pork is big business in Ohio, the country's eighth-largest producer, with 3,700 farms raising 4 million pigs a year.

Kristin Mullins, who lobbies for Ohio pork processors, said the move last year actually saved Ohio money because pork was less expensive at the time than other meats.

"Let's service the entire prison population and not let one portion dictate what's being served," said Mullins, who also represents processors in Kentucky and Tennessee.

In a federal lawsuit, death row inmate Abdul Awkal complains that the state is restraining his religious freedoms by not providing meals prepared according to Islamic law, known as halal, while at the same time supplying Jewish prisoners with kosher meals. The Quran, the holy book of Islam, prohibits Muslims from eating pork.

Awkal, joined by a second inmate not on death row, says the vegetarian and non-pork options aren't good enough. The inmates say food must be prepared in specific fashion, such as ensuring that an animal is butchered by slitting its throat and draining its blood, to conform to Islamic beliefs.

Prison guidelines for Muslim inmates already provided that meals will be "free of all pork and products containing or derived from pork."

A judge has given lawyers and inmates for the state until next month to finish filing documents bolstering their arguments, ahead of an expected January trial.

Ohio says requiring halal meals could mean new dietary plans for as many as 2,000 inmates, while Awkal's lawyers believe the figure is lower because not all Muslims eat halal meals.

Awkal, 52, is scheduled to die in June for killing his estranged wife, Latife Awkal, and brother-in-law Mahmoud Abdul-Aziz in 1992, in a room in Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court. Joining Awkal in the lawsuit is Cornelius Causey, 35, serving 15 years to life for murder and aggravated robbery convictions out of Hamilton County.

In court documents, Ohio has argued that it provides both non-pork and vegetarian meals to Muslims and says the courts have sided with this practice. The state also says that providing halal meals could hurt Ohio financially, given the current budget situation.

California provides packaged kosher meals to Jewish inmates and halal meals prepared at prisons for Muslim prisoners.

Texas, which does serve pork to prisoners, offers Muslim inmates regular, meat-free or pork-free meals but not halal meals.

Report: Egyptian "youths" use Facebook to plot attempted takeover of U.S. embassy if Palestinian statehood is vetoed at UN

Interestingly, this report is from the Fars News Agency in Iran, where Facebook is officially blocked. Otherwise, heaven knows young Iranians might start some kind of unholy water fight.
But the Iranian government never met an attempted U.S. embassy takeover it didn't like, and that apparently trumps the use of a method of organization that is proscribed in Iran. "Egypt's Youths Vow to Raid US Embassy if Palestine Bid at UN Vetoed," from Fars News Agency, September 24:
TEHRAN (FNA)- A group of Egyptian youths in a call via an internet social network called for demonstrations in front of the US Embassy in Cairo to take over the US compound if Washington vetoes the Palestinian bid for UN membership.
According to a report by Palestine al-Yawm (Palestine Today) news network, the young Egyptians have posted a request on their Facebook webpage and blasted Barack Obama's speech after his presidency in Cairo in which the US President pledged a new approach towards Muslims.
They said that the threat by the Obama administration to veto the Palestinian bid for UN membership revealed the realities about Obama and the fact they "he is a liar and is no different with his predecessors in supporting Israel and blatant violation of the Arab nations' rights".
The Egyptian youths said the attack on the US embassy would serve as a strong message in response to the US hegemonic policies.
They further warned the US to refrain from vetoing the Palestinian bid, saying that such a move by the US would encourage violence in the world.
Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmud Abbas has brought a Palestinian request for UN membership to New York, where top officials of all the member states of the world body have convened to attend an annual General Assembly sessions.
The future Palestinian state would include the West Bank and Gaza, with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital. The PA says it believes that more than 130 countries would recognize the state of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders.
Israel and the US strongly oppose the Palestinian move. Washington, which supports Tel Aviv's position, claims that a Palestinian state can only be achieved through talks with Israel.
Just in case you forgot you were reading a report out of Iran:
Palestinians stress that they have never gained anything through talks with the Zionist regime, mentioning that negotiation with the racist regime is a waste of time and gives the Zionists the chance to push their settlement construction plans ahead and come along with their international and internal problems.

The United States of Islam’: Muslim Brotherhood Spokesman Calls on Arab Youth to Launch a New Revolution in the West & Establish a Global Islamic State

MEMRI (The Middle East Media Research Institute) reports that in an “interview with the Egyptian daily Al-Shorouq, Dr. Kamal Al-Helbawy, former Muslim Brotherhood spokesman in the West, called upon the Arab youth to launch a new revolution that would eliminate the borders drawn by imperialist nations and bring about the establishment of a global Islamic state – called ‘The United States of Islam.’ According to Al-Helbawy, the Muslim Brotherhood is active in approximately 80 countries and strives to realize the dream of becoming a global organization.”
Interview excerpt:
“The Muslim Brotherhood is organized in 80 countries, and they and the Islamists have a right to establish a global movement, much like global socialism or Zionism…”
“Why Shouldn‘t We Have A Country Called ’The United States Of Islam’… I Propose That the Arab Peoples… Take To the Streets With the Slogan ‘The Arab People Wants To Remove the Borders [Between Its Countries]‘
“Q: Regarding the global organization – will a Muslim Brotherhood member associate himself with the [global] movement or with his homeland? And what will happen should there be a contradiction between them?”
“A: There will be no contradictions. Our thinking and our affiliation are to the exalted Allah. Our affiliation is to Islam. The global state of Islam is our ideal…
“How will countries like Bahrain or Qatar defend themselves? Why shouldn‘t we have a country called ’The United States of Islam,’ ruled by a white man or a black man…
“I propose that the Arab peoples who demonstrated for the sake of the revolution, so they could move from the stage of oppression and corruption to the stage of stability and security, organize themselves from now on and set a deadline – five or 10 years – [and] take to the streets with the slogan ‘The Arab People Wants to Remove the Borders [Between Its Countries]‘… These borders were drawn up by imperialist nations, making our rulers guardians of imperialist borders…

“I wish to say something important: Because the Muslim Brotherhood does not have an international organization with authority… the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria made a pact with [then-Syrian vice president] ‘Abd Al-Halim Khaddam, and the Muslim Brotherhood in Iraq objected to the movement’s general direction. The idea of an international organization now needs to be transformed from a dream into a reality. While it is not part of the Muslim Brotherhood’s plan to come to power – they will be soldiers under any suitable regime that will be established.”
“If Ibn Taymiyya Were Among Us – What Would He Think Of Ahmadinejad’s Stance Against Israel While Arab Rulers Protect Israeli Embassies?
“Q: How would you explain the actions of some of the Salafis [that contradict this]?”
“A: The actions taken by some of the Salafis are unbefitting of Muslims. The Salafis in Egypt are not one group, but [divided] into different schools…
“I say to our Salafi brothers: Why do you focus only on [external] appearance, on the beard, the miswak [tooth-cleaning stick noted in Islamic jurisprudence], and the jilbab [religious garment]? There are many things far more important to Muslim society – chiefly a military industry, which is a means and a tool of jihad, as Ibn Taymiyya said…
“If Ibn Taymiyya were among us, what would he think of [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad’s stance against Israel, while Arab rulers protect Israeli embassies and applaud the symbols of the Zionist entity?”

Muslim Brotherhood Figure and Former Spokesman in the West: Establish a Global Islamic State

In a June 8, 2011 interview with the Egyptian daily Al-Shorouq, Dr. Kamal Al-Helbawy, former Muslim Brotherhood spokesman in the West, called upon the Arab youth to launch a new revolution that would eliminate the borders drawn by imperialist nations and bring about the establishment of a global Islamic state – "called 'The United States of Islam.'" According to Al-Helbawy, the Muslim Brotherhood is active in approximately 80 countries and strives to realize the dream of becoming a global organization.
Following are excerpts from the interview:[1]
"Is There a Party That Suffered More and Had More Of Its Members Arrested By the Mubarak Regime" Than the Muslim Brotherhood?
"Q: Do you think that the Muslim Brotherhood's new Freedom and Justice Party will be able to operate independently of the movement?"
"A: Of course. If the party is not totally independent of the movement, it will never succeed. [Without such independence between them] the Muslim Brotherhood will fail politically, and be immersed in many problems. The people will distance themselves from [the Brotherhood] and its party..."
"Q: Following Mubarak's ouster, some movement officials declared their candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections, for approximately one-third of the seats. Others spoke of one-half of the seats. What do you think of this dispute?"
"A: Statements made by movement officials before the Shura Council convened are not considered official decisions... The movement announced this [high] percentage so that it could win 30-35 percent of the seats. There is a formal difference between an opinion and a decision.
"In truth, both positions are striving to achieve some 35%. Bidding for 50% [of the seats] does not mean you will win them all."
"Q: The movement called upon many political forces to join a unified [parties] list, but concurrently announced that it will run for 50% [of the seats] on its own. [This contradiction] constitutes a negative message by the Muslim Brotherhood."
"A: If the Muslim Brotherhood violated an agreement it made [to unite with other parties], it was a mistake, but if there was dialogue that did not result in a clear decision, it is their right to make their own decisions.
"Allow me to ask: Is there a party that suffered more and had more of its members arrested by the Mubarak regime? It is no shame that it is the most organized force on the streets. Everyone is talking about it, in [Egypt] and abroad, even though the Muslim Brotherhood was outlawed.
"Where are the other parties? Why are they not doing what the Muslim Brotherhood did? Haven't the communists and the Al-Wafd people been around for decades? Why are they not doing what the [Brotherhood has done], or even surpassing it, and why are they not organizing? It is inconceivable for the political forces to punish the Muslim Brotherhood simply because they are organized."
"Q: Are you still a member of the Muslim Brotherhood?"
"A: I grew distant from the movement's leadership in 1997, and turned to intellectual activity and research. To the best of my knowledge, the movement has not dismissed me thus far.
"I believe that anyone over the age of 65 should resign from their organizational position in the movement, and take to the streets to educate the people [as I did].
"I proposed a program, as part of which people will go out to the cafés. Each member over the age of 65 will choose a café in his area and hold a dialogue with people there. In this way we will turn the cafés into clubs and cultural [meeting] places, thus transforming the Muslim Brotherhood into a force that will power national dialog. The Muslim Brotherhood must go to the periphery... meet the people, and discuss their problems."
"Q: What was your organizational role before you resigned?"
"A: I was the Muslim Brotherhood's spokesman in the West, and a member of the office of the World General Guide [of the Brotherhood's executive office] and of [its] World Shura Council. In that context, [the Brotherhood has] no body called 'The International Organization.'
"Such an organization is a dream for the Muslim Brotherhood, a dream that was murdered in the name of [Mubarak's] corruption and tyranny, when he banned [Brotherhood members] from traveling and holding meetings.
"Here I must ask bluntly: Why did Israel say that Mubarak is a strategic treasure? Because his crimes act as a barrier against the resistance and the Muslim Brotherhood. In this atmosphere, it was hard to manage a global organization. Today, there is great hope that we can realize [this goal], since we witnessed the opening of the Muslim Brotherhood's new headquarters, attended by Brotherhood [activists] from all countries.
"The Muslim Brotherhood is organized in 80 countries, and they and the Islamists have a right to establish a global movement, much like global socialism or Zionism..."
"Why Shouldn't We Have A Country Called 'The United States Of Islam'... I Propose That the Arab Peoples... Take To the Streets With the Slogan 'The Arab People Wants To Remove the Borders [Between Its Countries]'
"Q: Regarding the global organization – will a Muslim Brotherhood member associate himself with the [global] movement or with his homeland? And what will happen should there be a contradiction between them?"

Obama is angry that Gibson is made in the USA not by his beloved MUSLIMS COUNTRY'S, No Jobs for Americans

Obama is angry that Gibson is made in the USA not by his beloved MUSLIMS COUNTRY'S, No Jobs for Americans

Is Fed Raid on Gibson Guitar Company Enforcing Policy . . . or a Push to Target 'Made in the USA'?

On August 24, armed agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Homeland Security raided the corporate headquarters and two factories of the Gibson Guitar company. The agencies took away 24 pallets of Indian rosewood and ebony, as well as a number of guitars and computer files.
The federal agents’ contention is that Gibson had illegally imported the exotic wood, which is used to make fretboards and bridges for their high-end instruments. Under the 1900 Lacey Act, which was amended in 2008 to include wood products, American companies must abide by the laws of source countries when importing products. The intent of the law is to protect endangered species of wildlife and plants. U.S. Fish and Wildlife claims that the Gibson wood – in the form of fingerboard ‘blanks’ -- was illegal to export from India and therefore illegal to import into the United States.
Now here’s the rub. While the feds say the wood – as imported – is illegal, had it been ‘finished’ by workers in India, it would have been perfectly legal to import. The wood itself was not banned, just the manufacturing process – or lack of it.
“I think they’re taking the position that we should be shifting these jobs overseas,” says Bruce Mitchell, the chief legal counsel for Gibson. “We have – probably 40 people in our factory here just at USA who are doing the inlays into the fingerboard … that are putting the fret on. If all that was to be done over in India, then …. those jobs would be lost.
What’s most puzzling about this case is that India is perfectly happy to ship the fingerboard ‘blanks’ to the United States. In a letter dated July 13, the deputy director general of foreign trade for India confirmed that “fingerboards made of rosewood and ebony is (sic) freely exportable.”
U.S. Fish and Wildlife offered no comment about the discrepancy. But people involved in the import and export of musical instruments and parts believe the US Department of Justice offered its own interpretation of Indian law. Even though India saw no reason for an enforcement action, the U.S. did.
“It is such an outrageous position – it has hurt Gibson tremendously – has criminalized Gibson and its workplace and its workers. It is an unsustainable position that they’re taking,” Mitchell says.
Something else to consider in all of this: Gibson uses the same wood, from many of the same suppliers and importers that nearly every other guitar company in America does. And they have not been targeted. You might ask – why?
Rewind the clock two years. Gibson was raided in 2009 and a shipment of rosewood and ebony from Madagascar was seized. Gibson argued that the wood was obtained through proper channels, but U.S. Fish and Wildlife argued that Gibson could not adequately prove that the wood came from legitimate sources. Again, the issue of ‘finishing’ the wood came into play. Had Gibson imported finished parts from Madagascar instead of ‘blanks,’ it would have been perfectly legal.
No charges have been filed as of yet, and Gibson is fighting in court to get its wood back.
It could be that the Madagascar issue put Gibson front and center on the Department of Justice's radar screen.
There was a discrepancy in the import of this latest shipment of wood. It was listed with an improper tariff code, which the importer, Luthiers Mercantile International of Windsor, Calif., claimed was a clerical error by a junior employee and tried to clear up. But rather than talk to the importer and Gibson about it, the Justice Department dispatched U.S. Fish and Wildlife and DHS agents to raid the Gibson compounds.
Gibson feels it has been unfairly targeted. “We are being singled out. Very much so,” says Mitchell. “Every music instrument company in the United States uses rosewood fingerboards. Period. And they’re in the same state – they’re buying from the same suppliers, they’re using the same shippers.”
Gibson has also been working hard to maintain proper sources of wood, working with the Forest Stewardship Council to insure its suppliers are certified. Gibson also works closely with the Rainforest Alliance on sustainable supplies of exotic woods. It’s a no-brainer for Gibson and other guitar manufacturers. If they can’t get the highly sought-after tone woods that artists crave, they just might go out of business.
Outside observers see a more sinister possibility in all of this. Henry Juszkiewicz, Gibson’s CEO, is a Republican, who has contributed to Republican candidates (as well as some Democratic candidates). Other guitar companies, which have not been targeted, are led by Democrats. Is there a political motivation to all of this? Neither Mitchell, nor Juszkiewicz will offer an opinion, but consider what Juszkiewicz told Neil Cavuto on "Your World."
“You know we've been pretty low key. We're a guitar company. We've been manufacturing guitars. We've been involved in the environmental movement. We’ve been trying to do the right thing in terms of sourcing. We really don’t know why they are picking on us.”

Poll: Many Americans uncomfortable with Muslims
A new survey finds many Americans are uncomfortable with Muslims.

Poll: Many Americans uncomfortable with Muslims

By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor
Washington (CNN) – Ten years after 9/11, Americans are wrestling with their opinions of Muslims, a new survey found, and where Americans get their TV news is playing a role in those opinions.
Nearly half of Americans would be uncomfortable with a woman wearing a burqa, a mosque being built in their neighborhood or Muslim men praying at an airport. Forty-one percent would be uncomfortable if a teacher at the elementary school in their community were Muslim.
Forty-seven percent of survey respondents said the values of Islam are at odds with American values.
The Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution conducted the survey and issued a report, "What it Means to be American: Attitudes in an Increasingly Diverse America 10 Years after 9/11."
“Americans are wrestling with fear, but on the other hand they're also wrestling with acceptance,” said Robert P. Jones, CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute.
The results of the survey were announced Tuesday at the Brookings Institution in Washington.
One issue that seemed to divide respondents was sharia law.
Overall, 61% of respondents disagreed that Muslims want to establish sharia law in the U.S.
"2011 has been an enormously active year for this question," Jones said. "Forty-nine bills have been introduced in 29 states to ban sharia law. We asked the same question back in February, and only 23% of Americans agreed Muslims want to establish sharia as the law of the land. That number has gone up to 30%, so still a minority, but the minority has grown."
The numbers were also showed a correlation with where people went for their news.
Of Americans who say they trust Fox News the most for their television news, 52% believe that Muslims are trying to establish sharia law in the United States. Sixty-eight percent of Fox viewers believed the values of Islam were at odds with American values.
The report says fewer than one-third of Americans who most trust broadcast news, CNN (20%) and public television (23%) believe that Muslims are trying to establish sharia.
"It's an emotional roller coaster," said Dr. Muqtedar Khan, a professor of political science at the University of Delaware. "I looked at this survey, and I'm really depressed."
Khan, a practicing Muslim, was particularly disturbed by the attitudes toward Muslims and what he called a misunderstanding of sharia law. "Sharia is just a prop, an attempt to say, 'we just don't know and like Muslims.' "
The survey also found strong support of religious liberty and tolerance.
Eighty-eight percent of those contacted by pollsters agreed that "America was founded on the idea of religious freedom for everyone, including religious groups that are unpopular."
One year after a Florida pastor burned a copy of the Quran, 95% of people polled said religious books should be treated with respect.
And two-thirds of those polled said there should be strict separation between church and state.
According to Jones, 2,450 Americans were reached by phone for the survey, and it had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points

Obama supports and wants Multiculturalism in the USA. The movement of Multiculturalism is: "We move into YOUR country. We set up House. We DO NOT OBEY the laws of YOUR country. We establish the Laws of the Country we came from and then force it on your laws your courts your people!" This is what Multiculturalism is and it doesn't work! People who obey the laws are driven out of their homes because they cannot live with these foreigners.

Michigan: Muslim politicians support sharia, oppose bill targeting ‘foreign’ laws

If you’re opposed to banning sharia law, then don’t be surprised when people call you out for supporting it. via Politics-State | Michigan bill targets use of ‘foreign’ laws like Sharia | The Detroit News.
Oralandar Brand-Williams/ The Detroit News
Detroit— A state lawmaker wants Michigan to join the trend of states banning “foreign laws,” but Muslim activists say the effort is a thinly veiled attack on Islam.
Rep. Dave Agema, R-Grandville, is pushing a bill to bar the implementation of foreign laws. It doesn’t mention Sharia — Islamic law — but he acknowledged it would be prohibited in courts under the legislation intended to prevent anyone “who tries to shove any foreign law down our throats.”
“No foreign law shall supersede federal laws or constitution or state laws or constitution,” Agema said. “Our law is our law. I don’t like foreign entities telling us what to do.”
Agema said his bill would protect the “vast majority” of Muslims, whom he contended “come to this country to get away from Sharia.”
Apparently Oralandar Brand-Williams doesn’t neccesarily agree that the “vast majority” of Muslims came here to get away from sharia. Did they come here to live under sharia?
The legislation comes at a time of heightened debate about Sharia, a set of religious rules governing personal conduct, family relationships and religious practice for Muslims. Critics fear Sharia could supersede civil law and have an impact on divorce and child custody cases, and similar legislation has been introduced in 25 states.
Some say the bills are unnecessary and pander to anti-Muslim paranoia.
“Agema … is a reflection of a segment of the GOP that is openly xenophobic and Islamophobic,” said Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Michigan chapter.
CAIR. A Hamas terrorist-linked Muslim group.
State Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, plans to speak out about the bill during a press conference Tuesday in Midtown. Victor Begg, a prominent Republican and co-founder of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan, called the bill “appalling.”
The Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan (CIOM) is a proud partner with two unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation convictions – CAIR and ISNA, as well as the Islamic Shura Council of Michigan. Yes, a shura council. The background on Tlaib ain’t pretty either.
“Some in our party find it politically opportune to target my faith by sponsoring an innocuous sounding bill, knowing well that their intent is so-called ‘creeping Sharia,’” Begg said.
Agema called the criticism “hogwash.”
If anybody has a problem with this that means they don’t agree with U.S. laws,” he said. “If they don’t want it passed then they have an ulterior agenda. It shows the people accusing me of that (bigotry) are guilty of it themselves.”
The bill was introduced in June and hasn’t made it to a legislative committee, and its fate is unclear.
So far, only Tennessee and Oklahoma have enacted similar laws. A federal judge blocked implementation in Oklahoma while she determines whether it violates the U.S. Constitution’s guarantees of religious freedom.
The law was amended in Tennessee after Muslims complained it targeted their religion.
William Raftery, a spokesman for the Virginia-based National Center for State Courts, said legislation is “moving quickly” in some states. Others say the debate is just heating up.
Christine Brim, a spokeswoman for the Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C., said her group has identified 50 cases that could be influenced by Sharia. Most involved divorce or child custody and one was in Michigan, she said.
“There’s a lot of them out there,” Brim said. “We think we’ll see more with the increased immigration of people from countries that are totalitarian.”

Starving Palestinians Update: Smuggled BMW goes for $100,000

High-salaried Palestinian Authority officials are the smugglers' clientele. So in other words, they are paying for these cars with your UN relief money.
"Smuggling in North Sinai Surges as the Police Vanish," by David D. Kirkpatrick in the New York Times, August 14 (thanks to Bill):
RAFAH, Egypt — The smuggler’s car lot is so brazenly out in the open, it is hard to tell that the business is actually illegal. A Bedouin car smuggler in Rafah, Egypt, can expect to make at least $2,000 per vehicle, after paying suppliers and bribes.
Cars are driven from the chaos in Libya to this small patch of sand amid the fig trees in the North Sinai desert, where Palestinians can pick out their model and haggle over the price. Then they wait in Gaza for delivery through tunnels snaking beneath the border.
The police have all but disappeared from the northern Sinai since the Egyptian revolution, and the smuggling business has grown so exponentially that Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza, recently decided to limit the car imports to 30 a week for fear of pollution and traffic congestion in the narrow Mediterranean enclave, smugglers say.
“There are no police around to check,” one smuggler said as a white Hyundai Tucson with Libyan plates pulled into the lot.
As law enforcement returns elsewhere in Egypt six months after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, there is still almost no sign of the police in Bedouin-dominated North Sinai, the region along the border with Israel that has long been a center of criminal activity. Mr. Mubarak treated it as virtual enemy territory and flooded it with police officers as he sought to help enforce an Israeli blockade of Gaza.
And now the withdrawal of his security forces has unleashed not only a smuggling bonanza but also a more violent backlash against his Israel policy. Six unexplained bombing attacks (the first one failed to go off) have repeatedly shut down a pipeline that delivers natural gas to Israel under a Mubarak-era contract that is wildly unpopular because of its association with both Israel and corruption. The interruption of the gas supply has done as much as any formal policy change to strain relations between the two allies. No one has been arrested in any of the attacks.
The Egyptian military announced over the weekend that it was deploying more troops to the border region to help with security, but Bedouin around Rafah said Monday that they had noticed no change. [...]
