A war memorial to honour civilians killed in the London Blitz has had to have protective 5ft high metal railings built around it after youths scrawled offensive slogans on it including ‘Kill the Brits’.
The elegant modern sculpture of a dove in flight, the traditional sign of peace, sits in the Hermitage Memorial Park, Wapping, overlooking the River Thames in London’s East End and has been subjected to continual graffiti attacks since its unveiling three years ago.

One, who asked not to be named, said that some of the vandalism on the side of the monument facing the river was ‘hostile and horrible’.
‘Anyone walking along the path in front of the park would have noticed that the front of the memorial was covered in Asian names and what appeared to be the tags of Asian gangs,’ the resident said.
‘This part of London is a multi-racial area so in a way you would expect that. You would think it was just the work of local kids.
‘But what passers-by didn’t see was the vandalism and the graffiti on the side facing the river. Some people felt it was clearly racist – and it did include phrases such as “Kill the Brits”.’
‘Anyone walking along the path in front of the park would have noticed that the front of the memorial was covered in Asian names and what appeared to be the tags of Asian gangs.’

The vandalism has been particularly upsetting for those who fought a long campaign to establish the park, which is built on the site of a former Second World War bomb shelter. London’s East End was one of the areas worst affected by the Blitz. Hermitage Memorial Park is now a popular attraction and the monument, the work of acclaimed local sculptor Wendy Taylor, is a local landmark.
But the battle against the graffiti thugs has been unrelenting – with the vandals seemingly going out of their way to defile the monument.
On one occasion Ms Taylor, who lives close to the park, had to flee the site after she confronted a number of hostile youths who she felt were disrespecting the sculpture.
And even when wire fencing was erected around the monument last year so a £10,000 clean-up operation could begin, the attacks continued. On one occasion, a group of youths was spotted trying to break through the wire with bolt-cutters.
Ms Taylor, who has now managed to clean the sculpture, installed the new railings in February and so far they have kept the memorial safe.
Frank Muldoon, a member of the Hermitage Environment Group, which raised the funds to pay for the sculpture, said: ‘The railings are not something we wanted but the monument was being defaced so we had to.

‘It is true they were probably Asian in origin but people should not read too much into that. This area has a lot of Asian young people so in a sense you would expect that.’
Jim Fitzpatrick, the local Labour MP, said: ‘It is sad that we have had to protect the monument in this way but if this is the price we have to pay then so be it.’
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘In 2010 we did receive reports of antisocial behaviour and criminal damage occurring in and around the memorial park in Wapping. In particular, the criminal damage appeared to centre around the war memorial within the park.
‘The fence was erected in February and there have been no further reports of criminal damage within the park or directed towards the memorial.’

Do you know these looting suspects? Police release just TWELVE pictures (but we've found 30 more for you to be going on with)
These are just some of the youths suspected of plundering hundreds of businesses damaged in riots across London since riots began in Tottenham on Saturday. The pictures will help police bring to justice those offenders who took part in the trouble which has rocked the capital.

They have been accused of a sluggish response to last nights riots, standing back and watching looters destroy shops and taking a softly-softly approach.
But today, when the Metropolitan Police had a chance to identify scores - if not hundreds - of thugs and looters, they released just 12 grainy CCTV photographs of people 'we will be speaking to'.
As scenes of wanton violence and looting shocked the world, viewers should at least have been comforted by the fact that so many of the rioters had failed to conceal their identity and would swiftly be reported to officers
In addition to the dozen pictures released by the Met, Mail Online has printed a further 30 images below.
Furthermore an anonymous Tumblr blog has been set up called 'Catch a Looter' which is encouraging members of the various communities to help identify many of the criminals that have been involved in the chaos that has engulfed the capital.

One image shows a teenage girl carrying clothes over one arm and, once her hands are full, even draping a jacket over her head.

Another shows a man inspecting a brand new pair of jeans which still have the tag on them.
And from one shop a young girl runs from the the shattered entrance carrying stolen fizzy drinks and bags of crisps.
One child even carries a shopping basket full of groceries on the handlebars of his push bike.
The Metropolitan Police said that their priority is to bring to justice those who have committed violent and criminal acts.
Operation Commander Simon Foy said: 'Operation Withern is continuing apace. As well as the many arrests and charges the team is working hard to identify suspects.
'Those who have or intend to go out and commit violent, criminal acts should be warned. We will have photographs and evidence that we will use to identify you and bring you to justice.
'Today we are releasing the first of many, many images of people we will be speaking to in connection with the scenes of violence.
'We will not tolerate the violence that has been seen in parts of London.'
The Met have released their own pictures of rioters from the disturbance. They show thugs in Birmingham trying to break into a jewellers.
A number of young women are also seen emerging from a Richer Sounds electronics store in Croydon. More are seen entering a PC store.
The looters who were caught on cameras are just a handful of the thousands of people believed to have been involved in public disorder since riots began in Tottenham on Saturday night.
The unrest has spread to dozens of Londons of towns with businesses being attacked, buildings set fire and shops looted.
More than 450 people are so far understood to have been arrested, although that number could increase in the coming days.
Police have appealed for anybody with information that could identify the looters and rioters to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Several premises were attacked with some shop windows smashed and property stolen in various locations in the centre as well as some surrounding areas. The number of people arrested in the city at around 100 .
Some areas in the city centre remain cordoned off as forensic officers examine the scenes of the disorder.
Avon and Somerset Police are urging people to come forward and identify those believed to be in connection with an attack on Thomas Sabo jewellers on Brigstow Street in Cabot Circus, Bristol last night.
Meanwhile, West Midlands Police also made fresh pleas to members of the public to step forward with any information after new images of rioters were published.
Following the disorder that took place in Birmingham, the police are hoping that the images will encourage those who recognise many who tried in vein to conceal their identities.
