The widow of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has retained legal counsel who has an extensive client roster of suspected and convicted terrorists.
Katherine Russell added attorney Joshua Dratel to her legal team, her Rhode Island-based lawyer Amato DeLuca said on Wednesday.
The New York lawyer, whose office in Downtown Manhattan is just blocks away from Ground Zero, previously defended Guantanamo Bay detainees and suspects in the bombings of the U.S. embassies in East Africa.

Tamerlan Tsaranev's 24-year-old widow has been under increased scrutiny ever since federal officials found radical Islamist materials on her laptop, including the al Qaeda magazine Inspire.
Investigators also found traces of explosive residue in the Cambridge, Massachusetts, home Russell had shared with her late husband and their 3-year-old daughter.
Russell's defense team said in a statement that she 'plans to continue to meet with investigators, part of a series of meetings over many hours where she has answered questions.'

As of yet, Russell has not been charged with any crime but has beefed up her legal team with an expert in defending terrorist suspects.
Russell's attorneys have previously said she and her family were in shock when they learned of the allegations against her husband and brother-in-law, Dzhokhar.
Authorities, though, are said to be skeptical of her insistence that she played no role in the attack or in helping the brothers escape the authorities following the release of the photographs, according to a report by the New York Times.

‘Mr. Dratel's unique, specialized experience will help insure that Katie can assist in the ongoing investigation in the most constructive way possible,’ DeLuca, Russell's Providence-based lawyer, said in a statement.
Miriam Weizenbaum, who similarly is based out of Rhode Island, is also on Russell's legal team.
The newest addition, Dratel, was the lead counsel for Australian David Hicks, who had attended the al-Qaeda linked, al-Farouq training camp in Afghanistan during 2001.
Hicks was detained at Guantanamo Bay and deemed an enemy combatant. He was convicted of providing support for terrorists and transferred to South Australia's Yatala Labour Prison in 2007.
Hicks, now 37, was released in December 2007 and is appealing his conviction in the U.S., on the basis that the military commission system created by Presidential Order was unconstitutional.
Dratel also defended Wadih el-Hage in connection to the 1998 Osama bin Laden backed bombings of the United States embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
The American embassies in the East African capitals of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya killed 223 and injured more than 4,000.
El-Hage, 52, was convicted in 2001 on several federal counts for his role in the attacks.

The convicted terrorist, a Lebanese born man who moved to the U.S. and became a citizen in 1989, is serving a life sentence at a federal prison in Florence, Colorado.
Dratel, a graduate of Columbia College and Harvard Law School, also was involved in the defense team in the case against suspected embassy bomber Mohamed Suleiman al-Nalfi.

In 2004, Dratel had represented Sami Omar al-Hussayen, the Saudi computer science graduate student at the University of Idaho who was suspected of running websites that had links to terrorist organizations.
He was acquitted of charges relating to the terrorist affiliations but he was deported to Riyadh, where he now works as a teacher, on suspicion of immigration charges.
In addition to Russell, Dratel is also currently representing Mohammad el-Mezain, a defendant in the federal prosecution of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development - an Islamic non-profit organization that had been based in Richardson, Texas.
The fund was shut down on suspicion that it had been used to funnel money to Hamas and other Islamic terrorist organizations.
El-Mezain was convicted in 2008 on charges including material support to a foreign terrorist organization, providing material support to a foreign terrorist, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Russell's brother-in-law, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, has reportedly told investigators that Russell was not involved in the planning and execution of the deadly attacks on April 15, that left 3 dead and injured more than 260.
Dzhokhar's older brother was killed in a police gun battle April 19.
The 19-year-old Dzhokhar was captured and charged in connection to the bombings following a massive manhunt that ended. He was discovered wounded hiding inside a boat in a backyard.
He is charged with using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death and with malicious destruction of property resulting in death.
Russell met Tamerlan while she was a student at Suffolk University, according to her lawyer. She converted to Islam and they married in 2010 before having a daughter, now three.

 Federal officials investigating the Boston bombings have discovered radical Islamist materials on a computer belonging to the widow of the deceased suspect, it was revealed Friday.

Katherine Russell, 24, has repeatedly claimed through her attorney that she knew nothing about the deadly April 15 bombings allegedly set off by her late husband, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and his younger brother, Dzhokhar.

However, the discovery of al Qaeda’s Inspire magazine on Russell’s computer, along with the presence of explosive residue throughout their home, have raised new questions about Russell's possible involvement in the act of terror.

According to a government document obtained by NBC News, an analysis of the bombs used at the Boston Marathon and pipe bombs that the Tsarnaevs had allegedly thrown at police may have been built following instructions that appeared in an Inspire article titled: Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom.

Officials have yet to determine whether the Islamist files found in Russell’s possession belonged to the 24-year-old mother, her late 26-year-old husband or a third party, a source told The Washington Post.

Tamerlan Tsranaev was shot dead in a gun battle with police four days after the marathon bombings when he and his brother allegedly carjacked a vehicle in a Boston suburb.

His younger brother, 18-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, had fled, setting off a massive manhunt that ended when he was discovered gravely wounded hiding in a boat.

Russell's attorney, Amato DeLuca, had previously said his client was kept in the dark about the deadly plot, and she was shocked to learn that her husband and brother-in-law were allegedly responsible for the attacks.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that investigators inspecting Russell and Tsranaev's home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, found traces of explosive residue in the kitchen sink, the bathtub and on a table.

Following his arrest, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told police that he and his older brother built the pressure cooker bombs in the basement of the Cambridge residence.

It was established earlier this week that female DNA found one a piece of an explosive device used in the attacks did not match Russell's, but rather belonged to a department store clerk where the siblings had purchased the pressure cookers.

In another development in the case, federal and state law enforcement officials accompanied by bomb-sniffing dogs scoured a wooded area near Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev attended college, in search of new evidence possibly related to the attacks.

It was revealed earlier this week that Tamerlan Tsarnaev called his wife in the hours after the FBI released surveillance images of him and his younger brother.

But only Russell knows what was said in the conversation, as she has stopped cooperating with authorities over recent days, the New York Times reported.

Authorities are skeptical of her insistence that she played no role in the attack or in helping the brothers escape the authorities following the release of the photographs, the Times reported.

A source told CNN that the bombs were built in the apartment that Tsarnaev shared with Russell and their three-year-old daughter. Residue samples were found on the kitchen table, the kitchen sink, and the bathtub, the source said.

Her silence comes as sources told the newspaper that the fingerprints and female DNA found on at least one of the bombs did not belong to her. Authorities had taken a sample from her this week.

1. Yesterday I was very confused on where the bombs were made, Because of the back pack of supplies it lead me to believe it was the brother's Dzhokhar apartment. But now it comes out it was Katherine's apartment. And she claims she knew nothing about this.
2. She called Tamerlan and told him the FBI was looking for him for the bombing But she knew nothing about him making the bombs while she lived in the apartment then packed up her kid and ran to her parents to make up a story.
I am wondering what kind of parent would allow fireworks in the house with a toddler yet alone bombs. 
3 She claims Tamerlan brain washed her. Did Tamerlan mother brain wash Katherine when she went shoplifting also? This brain wash thing does not hold water with me.

Tsarnaev, who was later killed in a gunfight with authorities, called his wife in the hours after the FBI released surveillance images of him and his younger brother, Dzhokhar.

But only Russell knows what was said in the conversation, as she has stopped cooperating with authorities over recent days, the New York Times reported.

A new mugshot has been released showing Katherine Russell, the widow of suspected Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsraneav, as she looked in 2007 at the time of her arrest for stealing $67 worth of clothing from an Old Navy store in Warwick, Rhode Island.

The picture shows Russell as an 18-year-old, in the accompanying police report she is described as 'skinny' with hazel eyes and red or auburn hair – now firmly concealed by her Hijab.

Since her husband’s death on April 19, Russell has taken refuge at her family's home and has been doing everything she can to distance herself from Tsarnaev.

Still, now as a single mother, she has had to sit her 3-year-old daughter, Zahara, down and tell her what happened to her father, Tamerlan Tsraneav, a relative has revealed.

'Daddy has gone to heaven and he still loves her very much,' Russell allegedly told her daughter of her father's absence, as People magazine reports.

'She broke the news as gently as possible, but Zahara wants to know why.'

Earlier this week Russell released a statement through Amato DeLuca, her Rhode Island attorney, saying that she wants her husband’s body released to the Tsarnaev family.

In addition to declining to claim the body herself, which is her right as his spouse, Russell has also reverted to using her maiden name.

One of Tamerlan's sisters, Bella Tsarnaev, told ABC that she and her sister Ailina plan to offer their brother a proper Muslim burial. Tamerlan's uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, also said on Tuesday that the family would take the body.

'We will do it,' he told the Associated Press. 'A family is a family.'

On Tuesday, DeLuca said Russell mourned the loss of life from the bombings.

Since her husband's death, Russell has been doing everything she can to distance herself from Tsarnaev

'Katherine and her family continue to be deeply saddened by the harm that has been caused,' DeLuca said.

DeLuca said Russell had meet with law enforcement 'for many hours over the past week' and was continuing to cooperate.

FBI agents visited Russell’s parent’s home on Monday apparently to take a sample of Katherine’s DNA after traces of a woman were found on one of the bombs used in the Boston Marathon attacks.

On Wednesday three friends of younger Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were arrested and charged with conspiring to both destroy evidence and lie to investigators after it was revealed that they took a backpack of fireworks and a laptop from his dorm room.

The criminal complaint lays out the series of events that led to the bomber’s three friends - Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, who are both Kazakh nationals, and an American named Robel Phillipos - being arrested on Wednesday. 

Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov were already in police custody at the time of their arrest and had been for over a week after previously being questioned about their ‘TERRORISTA#1’ license plate.

Authorities have held them on immigration issues because they are in the country illegally after their academic visas expired. 

Last week the MailOnline revealed that 25-year-old Islamic convert Russell has a criminal record and is a confessed shoplifter.

And in an intriguing twist, Russell, who was 18 at the time, told officers she was married though she was living at her parent’s North Kingstown home and did not meet Tsranaev until some two years later.

The startling revelation raised fresh questions over the past and character of the 'all-American girl' 'brainwashed' according to some, by her fanatic husband.

Katherine was arrested along with an unnamed female minor on 26 June 2007. The police report described her as unemployed and married.

Old Navy store security guard Linda Lewis stopped the girls having watched Katherine and her companion enter the store, select several items and put them in their handbags.

In 2011 Tamerlan’s mother, Zubeidat was charged with stealing several designer dresses worth $1600 from a store in suburban Natick.

Katherine’s foray was hardly on the same scale. She took five items valuing $67; her friend took three with a total item of $125.

She was placed in handcuffs and taken to Warwick Police Department.

According to the store Loss Prevention Agent Lewis: ‘They admitted to shoplifting the items and handed the over without further incident.’

Katherine was summonsed to appear at Kent County Courthouse where her charge was dismissed on paying a $200 fine and doing community service.

That fall Katherine enrolled in a Communications course at Suffolk University, Boston, an act that led to her meeting Tsranaev in a nightclub and the relationship that would ultimately derail her college dreams completely.

The revelation comes after it emerged that Tsarnaev displayed a disturbing pattern of verbal abuse and violence toward women, including his wife, according to those who knew him.

Close friends of his wife claimed that Tsarnaev, 26, was combative, angry and controlling. 

Russell spoke to federal authorities for the first time on April 22, after she was spotted leaving her Rhode Island family home with her lawyer and three federal investigators. She returned home nearly four hours later with her mother.

MESSAGE FROM SUSPECT'S WIDOW

Katherine Russell's lawyers released this statement on Tuesday morning at her request:

'As you know from news reports, Katie married her husband in June of 2010. Since then, she has been living in Cambridge, raising her child and working long hours, caring for people in their homes who are unable to care for themselves. 

'Katie grew up in Rhode Island and has always remained close to her parents and sisters here, as well as her extended family. 

'She is fortunate to have the support of her loving family now, as they, too, struggle to come to terms with these events and the deep sorrow we all feel following the events of last week. 

'Meanwhile, she is doing everything she can to assist with the investigation.

'The injuries and loss of life - to people who came to celebrate a race and a holiday - has caused profound distress and sorrow to Katie and her family. 

'The reports of involvement by her husband and brother-in-law came as an absolute shock to them all. 

'As a mother, a sister, a daughter, a wife, Katie deeply mourns the pain and loss to innocent victims - students, law enforcement, families and our community. In the aftermath of this tragedy, she, her daughter and her family are trying to come to terms with these events.'

Afterwards, her lawyers released a statement at her request that claimed she has been 'doing everything she can to assist with the investigation.'

'The injuries and loss of life - to people who came to celebrate a race and a holiday - has caused profound distress and sorrow to Katie and her family,' the statement read. 'The reports of involvement by her husband and brother-in-law came as an absolute shock to them all.'

Three of Russell's friends told National Public Radio's Laura Sullivan that Tsarnaev would often insult Russell and call her names, such as 'slut' and 'prostitute.'

He was known to fly into into fits of rage where he would throw objects, including furniture, friends said.

Russell's lawyer, Amato DeLuca, said she was a student at Suffolk University when she was introduced to Tsarnaev at a nightclub. He didn't specify the exact date that they met, though it's believed to be sometime during 2009.

Tsarnaev was seeing another woman at the time, he said.

'They went out for a while, and then they stopped and then they went out again,' DeLuca said.

It's possible the other woman that Tsarnaev was apparently dating was 25-year-old Nadine Ascencao of Brookline, Mass.

Tsarnaev was arrested in July 2009 for allegedly slapping Ascencao, according to court records.

Ascencao was 'crying hysterically' and called 911 to report that she was 'beat up by her boyfriend,' Cambridge Police Officer Angela Pereira wrote in the arrest report.

Tsarnaev told Pereira and another officer that his girlfriend 'was yelling at him because of another girl.'

Asked whether he had hit Ascencao, Tsarnaev stated, 'Yes, I slapped her.' He specifically stated that he struck the left side of her face.

Eleven months later, Tsarnaev was apparently no longer dating Aschencao. He had persuaded Russell to convert from Christianity to Islam and the couple married on June 21, 2010.

Around the same time, Russell became pregnant with Tsarnaev's baby. She dropped out of school in her senior year and reportedly began pulling away from her friends and family.

Mary Silberman, whose apartment backs up to Tsarnaev's Cambridge home, said she often heard loud arguments late at night that mostly consisted of a woman's voice yelling at a man.

'It wasn't enough to call the police,' Silberman told Reuters. 'It didn't sound like anyone was in physical danger.'

But the shouting was often loud enough to keep her awake at night. She could also hear the couple's daughter, Zahara, now three years old, wailing at night and she often wondered why the mother wasn't responding, she said.

As the girl grew into a toddler, Silberman said she would see Zahara staring out the window. 

Since Tsarnaev's death, Russell has been staying with her family in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Her lawyer, Amato DeLuca, told CNN on Monday that the 24-year-old is 'very distraught' and 'cries a lot.'

Regarding the bomb plot, DeLuca said, 'She knew nothing about it at any time.'

'The whole family is a mess, to put it bluntly,' he said. 'They're very distraught. They're upset. Their lives have been unalterably changed. They're upset because of what happened, the people that were injured, that were killed. It's an awful, terrible thing.'

Russell works 70 to 80 hours a week as a home health aide, according to family members. Tsarnaev was unemployed. 

Judith Russell, the 24-year-old's mother, read an emotional statement to the media outside the timber-framed detached family home.

  

‘Our daughter has lost her husband today, the father of her child,' she said. 'We cannot begin to comprehend how this horrible tragedy occurred. Our hearts are sickened by the knowledge of the horror he has inflicted.’

She added: ‘In the aftermath of the Patriots’ Day horror, we now know that we never really knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev.’
