Virginia Teacher Charged With Assault: Girl’s Hand Cut in Forced ‘Islamic Hand Sign’ Drill (Updated)

An elementary school teacher in Chesapeake, Va. has been charged with simple assault after a parent claimed her daughter’s hand was cut open as a result of the teacher yanking her arm aggressively while trying to teach students an “Islamic hand sign.”
Officer Leo Kosinski, a spokesman for the Chesapeake Police Department, told TheBlaze that Tara Harris was criminally charged with a misdemeanor on Oct. 11 and released on a summons. The case is currently under investigation.
“It’s still a criminal charge. It happened at the school and it involved a student,” Kosinski said. The police department could not release any additional information.

Stephanie Bennett, the mother of the 10-year-old girl who was allegedly assaulted at Butts Road Intermediate School, told TheBlaze in an emotional phone interview that Harris has a disturbing trend of “indoctrinating” students with Islamic teachings. She also said the teacher openly campaigns for President Barack Obama in the classroom.
The incident of alleged assault occurred on October 2, according to Bennett.
“The teacher was going over Islamic hand signs with the children — she stayed on this issue for two days straight during their reading and math class,” she said.
Bennett’s daughter suffers from a processing disorder, making it difficult for her to quickly grasp things like hand signs. “Not that she’s uneducated or anything. It’s just a processing problem,” the mother said.

When Bennett’s daughter was unable to do the Islamic hand sign correctly after two days of instruction, Harris became frustrated and attempted to twist the girl’s fingers to make the Islamic gesture meaning “power and strength.” The way Bennett described it, it sounds like an upside A-OK hand gesture. It is unclear exactly which “Islamic hand sign” was being promoted as the source information comes from children.
“When she didn’t get it right, [Harris] went over and yanked her hand out of her desk and my daughter’s hand got hung up on the metal wire on her file folder and the skin got caught on it,” the mother explained, her voice cracking with emotion. “The other children saw my daughter’s hand dripping with blood after the teacher had gotten so mad that she went to twist my daughter’s hand into an Islamic sign.”
After her child came home with the cut on her hand and she learned what had happened, Bennett immediately filed a police report. She claims to have pictures of her daughter’s injuries. She has agreed to share the pictures with TheBlaze, however, they were unable to be sent digitally late Wednesday night.
She says the day after the incident school officials informed her that Harris had been placed on administrative leave. On Tuesday, she was then informed that the teacher had been terminated from the Chesapeake Public School system all together. Her termination can not be independently confirmed as the messages left with multiple officials with the school system have not been returned. Attempts to contact Harris were also unsuccessful.
The mother said her daughter told her that Harris “prays to Allah in Arabic” around five times a day in front of students and teaches them about Islam and how it is superior to other religions. Bennett claims other parents have confirmed her suspicions after talking with their kids.
One of those parents, Nita Redditt, told TheBlaze that her young son confirmed Bennett’s story. The boy said he was “scared” to go back to school the next day after she found out, she added.
“I think he was intimidated,” Redditt said. “I couldn’t believe what was going on in the classroom in regards to this teacher praying to Allah and having them pray with her.”
Bennett said she wants the Chesapeake Police Department to conduct a full investigation into Harris’s actions. She also wants to know why she wasn’t notified immediately when another parent complained to Butts Road Intermediate School officials about Harris campaigning for Obama in the classroom and bashing Republican GOP nominee Mitt Romney.
Bennett said a school resource officer intially told her that “speaking in Arabic wasn’t against school policy.”
“Kids can’t stand up and fight for themselves. Someone’s got to fight for them,” Bennett said. “Why didn’t someone call me? Why weren’t any of the parents notified?”
What is strange is that no local news outlets appear to be reporting on the incident — not even the fact that a public school teacher was charged with assault.
Chesapeake Public Schools is still reeling from fresh allegations of criminal activity against one of its teachers. WAVY-TV reports that Bryan Carter, an assistant principal at Indian River High School, was arrested earlier this month and charged with abduction, burglary, attempted robbery and assault and battery.
PilotOnline.com, which serves the Chesapeake area, also reported on Wednesday that a Virginia Beach piano teacher had been charged with sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy.
So why are local media not covering the story involving Harris, who has been with the school since September, allegedly assaulting a 10-year-old student and forcing her class to learn Islamic hand signs? What makes this story different?
TheBlaze will continue to follow up with Chesapeake Public Schools for additional information on this developing story.

School administrator charged in assault

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A domestic incident has resulted in the arrest of a Chesapeake assistant principal, according to police.
Officer Leo Kosinski with the Chesapeake Police Department told WAVY.com officers responded to the 600 block of Pond Lane in reference to an assault.
After an investigation, officers arrested Bryan Carter, an assistant principal at Indian River High School. He has been charged with abduction, burglary, attempted robbery and assault and battery.
"I just heard about it in the hall. I was just leaving third block and I was totally shocked. I was baffled about it," says Indian River senior Taylor Langevin. "He's actually a pretty nice, decent guy. He'll do pretty much whatever he pretty much can to help you out."
Students say when the morning bell rang, Tuesday, the talk began.
"I heard that he was in jail and something about robbery or something. I didn't know. I thought it was a lie," says Kyle Louder, a senior at Indian River.
"If he's guilty, I don't think he should be a principal, an assistant principal, either," says Mark Thompson whose son graduated from Indian River in 2005.

A Chesapeake Sheriff Deputy says Carter remains in jail on no bond. His next court date is Oct. 15.
School administrators will not comment on Carter's job status saying only they cannot comment on personnel matters. As for students, they say they're a bit thrown off by the violent charges against a man many consider a mentor.

"You would never think of somebody that you're supposed to look up to would ever do anything like that," says Langevin.
Police have not released further details surrounding the incident. It is unknown at this time what the relationship is between Carter and the female victim.

Mom says teacher hurt child during Islamic lesson

CHESAPEAKE
Parents and teachers awoke Thursday morning to an alarming Internet story involving a special education teacher, an injured student and the specter of Islamic indoctrination.
What little of this story could be immediately verified came mainly from one source, and the officials who could either support the claims, or debunk them, are saying nothing.
Here is what The Virginian-Pilot has been able to confirm: A criminal charge has been filed against a Butts Road Intermediate School teacher based on a parent's complaint. The mother said the teacher assaulted her daughter during a lesson involving a Muslim "hand sign," according to the criminal complaint.
Police spokeswoman Kelly O'Sullivan confirmed that Tara Harris has been charged with simple assault, a misdemeanor, for an Oct. 2 incident at the school. Harris, who is a fifth-grade special education teacher, is due in court Monday.
O'Sullivan said a police investigator looked into the matter and closed the case, telling the student's mother, Stephanie Bennett, that if she wanted to pursue charges, she could take it up with a magistrate, which she did. The magistrate filed the charge based on the parent's account. O'Sullivan said police rarely bring charges in misdemeanor cases unless they witness the act.
The Pilot was not able to reach Harris on Thursday. School spokesman Tom Cupitt said Harris was charged with an offense that called for a suspension, according to state law. Her pay is being placed in escrow. "We cannot comment any further since this is a personnel matter," he said.
Several Chesapeake School Board members, including Thomas Mercer and Harry Murphy, gave the same reason for not discussing the issue.
The story first appeared on The Blaze, a website owned by former Fox News host Glenn Beck. Bennett declined to talk to The Pilot.
According to the complaint, Bennett said Harris for two days had been teaching her class a Muslim hand sign for "Power and Strength." On the second day, the complaint alleges, Harris lost her patience with Bennett's daughter and tried to force her to make the hand gesture. During the process, the child scratched her hand on a folder, according to Bennett's complaint.
Bennett said her daughter has a learning disability that makes it hard for her to process information.
Nita and Kevin Redditt also have a child in Harris' class. Kevin Redditt said his 11-year-old son, a special needs student, also was taught the hand sign. He said he felt the teacher was trying to indoctrinate his son.
It is not clear whether Harris is Muslim, or whether any such hand signs exist as a form of expression for the religion.
Harris' next-door neighbor, William Moore, said Harris is not Muslim. Harris and her family have lived in the same neighborhood for more than a decade, neighbors said. "They're the nicest people you ever wanted to meet - they've been great neighbors," Moore said.
Ahmed Noor, a trustee at the Mosque and Islamic Center of Hampton Roads in Hampton, said there are no hand gestures in the religion of Islam; however, as different cultures practice the religion, there could be a culture that both practices Islam and uses some sort of hand gesture.
Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic relations, also said he has never heard of any religious hand signs in his faith.
According to The Blaze, Bennett said the hand gesture was like an upside-down A-OK signal. When A.J. Jones, owner and director of Atma Bodha Yoga in Virginia Beach, heard that description, he said it sounded like a hand posture used in all forms of classical yoga called mudra. Yoga is rooted in the spiritual and philosophical traditions of Hinduism.
Parents picking up students from Butts Road Intermediate on Thursday said they didn't know of the incident first-hand, only of the story online. All who stopped said they love the school and can't imagine an incident like the one described in The Blaze.
"I can't believe what I'm hearing," said Eileen Buck, a recent transplant from Wisconsin with two children attending the school. "It's so incomprehensible to me."
Pilot writers Scott Daugherty, Elisabeth Hulette and Gabriella Souza contributed to this report.

Virginia: Muslim teacher cuts girl's hand in forced "Islamic hand sign" drill; known for "'indoctrinating' students with Islamic teachings"

I have no idea what "Islamic hand sign" could be meant here. The girl's hand was cut, and so the assault charge is justified; the larger question here, however, is this teacher's open Islamic indoctrination in a public school classroom. If she were proselytizing and preaching Christianity, she would be fired. What will happen to Tara Harris? She will probably become Hamas-linked CAIR's "Islamophobia" victim du jour.

Body Language in the Arab World

Body language in the UAE and amongst Arabs is completely different to that in the West. And because there a many Arabs here from different countries, it would make sense to understand a little about what certain body language might mean. We have touched on the importance of not showing the sole of your foot, but there are many more which we will briefly sum up here. Remember that in the Middle East, the concept of personal space is a lot smaller that in the West, and though you may feel that your space is being invaded, this is a normal part of society. Be careful when dealing with females making sure that you do not stare or initiate physical contact.

Hand on Heart - While this is usually just used as a phrase in the West, the Arabs actually place their hands on their heart to show genuine respect and humility. Sometimes, this is used in combination with a small bow, meaning thank you.

The Chin Scratch - Scratching or holding of a chin or beard is an indication that someone is thinking. It might be wise to wait until the person has finished thinking this before continuing talking, if it takes place during a moment of silence.

Kissing - Friends kissing each other on the cheek is considered normal and not linked to homosexuality. It is a sign of friendship, and it is common amongst male friends.

Kissing the shoulder - This is another greeting and usually one of respect. It is often used when Muslims go on the Hajj to Mecca.

The hand hold - Holding hands even for a long period after shaking hands is common place and a sign of friendship

The hug - If a hug is initiated by an Arab, then it is a sign that you are considered a trustworthy friend.

The refusal to touch - If an Arab refuses to touch you, it may be an indication that he considers you untrustworthy or unclean

Conversational staring - If an Arab stares you in the eye as you speak, it means that he is giving you his full attention. If he doesn't, it means that he may not care what you are saying. Bear this in mind and reciprocate giving eye contact.

The sideways finger bite - If an Arab bites their right finger, it is a sign of contempt and that you are not liked, and this will usually be accompanied by a muttering of some sort of curse!

The hungry sign - If a semi clenched hand is placed in front of the stomach, it means that you are thought to be a liar.

The finger on the Nose - This means that it is the intention of the person to undertake what you are talking about. Sometimes, this takes the form of the finger on beard, nose or head also, all meaning the same.

The cup - The hand signal of putting all your fingers and thumb together, sort of cup like, means 'Wait just one minute' or 'Slow down'. This sometimes may be used to indicate that the person is getting impatient at your speed.

The Head Snap - Snapping of the head upwards while tutting means No or an indication that you are wrong or that what you are saying is untrue.

The Nose Touch - You will often see Arab Nationals touch noses three times as they shake hands. This is a traditional Bedouin greeting.

The left finger clasp - If the fingers of the left hand are clasped together and touched with the right forefinger, this is the equivalent of giving someone the finger in the West. It is a very rude gesture.

The Scratching Claw - A clawing action with the right hand is usually indicative of a beckoning to move closer or to come into a room. This is probably equivalent to a beckoning with the one finger, used in the West, but this would be considered rude, if used in the Middle East.

Of course many Western gestures are used, in this multi cultural society, and you may find yourself learning all sorts of hand movements from all over the world. We hope that this gives you a general overview of what some of the Arab gestures actually mean.
