Brazil’s Embraer awarded $355 million U.S. Air Force contract
In a major victory for Brazil-U.S. commercial relations, Brazil’s Embraer won a contract to build counterinsurgency aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. Beating out U.S.-based Hawker Beechcraft, Embraer will provide America with 20 A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft, as well as support services for missions, as part of the $355 million deal.
The aircraft will be built in Florida, together with U.S. tech company Sierra Nevada. The project is slated to use more than 70 U.S.-based suppliers and create 1,200 American jobs.
While Embraer planes already enjoy a significant presence in the U.S. commercial market, this deal bolsters its credentials in the defense sector, which now makes up roughly 15 percent of its revenue.
Politically, the deal is a success for Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who has been trying to strengthen US-Brazilian relations following a recent rift over Iran’s nuclear program. Some Latin American countries already use Embraer’s Super Tucano in their air forces, but this deal with the U.S. Air Force could ease the company’s dealings with other governments as well.
The deal also appears to have assuaged fears regarding allegations of corruption in the Brazilian company.
But not everyone is happy. Hawker Beechcraft, partially owned by Goldman Sachs, filed suit with the Court of Federal Claims, saying that it had been excluded from the bidding for the contract.

Brazilian Company Wins Contract to Build US$ 4.6 Billion in Rigs for Petrobras
Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil and gas multinational announced that local shipyard Estaleiro Atlântico Sul (EAS) has won the tender to build seven drilling rigs in Brazil.
The contract is worth US$ 4.63 billion. The rigs will be used for the exploration and development of Petrobras pre-salt oil and gas fields that could make the country one of the world’s leading producers of hydrocarbons.
EAS is a consortium formed by South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and local construction giants Queiroz Galvão and Camargo Corrêa. According to the company website, AES was formed in 2005, the shipyard was completed in 2009, and the company specializes in naval and offshore construction.
The first rig is scheduled to enter operations in 2015, Petrobras said in a statement. All seven drilling rigs have signed leases, and the day-rates range from US$ 430,000 to US$ 475,000.
Companies that also presented bids included Brazilian consortium Alusa Galvão and overseas giants such as Singapore's Sembcorp Marineand Keppel Corp.
Petrobras plans to commission a total of up to 28 new drilling rigs to be built in Brazil to explore oil reserves in deep waters. According to initial plans, the rigs were expected to be delivered between 2013 and 2018.
These rigs are going to be owned and managed by a new holding company, Sete Brasil S.A., which will be held 90% by national bank Caixa Econômica Federal and 10% by Petrobras.
According to a 2009 report from Oil & Gas Journal, the first seven drilling rigs will be able to drill in waters up to 3.000 meters deep.
Ultra-deepwater drilling rigs are in high demand due to Petrobras contracting a large majority of the units for exploration and development offshore Brazil. Other ongoing deepwater activities include West Africa and in the mid term the Gulf of Mexico, estimates the oil industry publication
